Saas-Fee - Ski Map & Pistes

The resort offers a high-altitude ski area renowned for its glacier terrain, reliable snow, and breathtaking alpine views. There is a well-structured network of slopes that stretches from the village situated at 1,800 metres up to 3,600 metres, making it one of the highest ski areas in Switzerland. This altitude ensures excellent snow conditions throughout the season.

The ski area, over 142km, features a balanced mix of pistes suitable for all levels, including gentle blue runs near the mid-stations for beginners, long, scenic red runs ideal for intermediates, and challenging black runs descending from the glacier for advanced skiers.

Lifts and Queues

The modern, efficient lift system comprises 39 lifts, such as gondolas, cable cars, funiculars, and chairlifts that transport visitors smoothly across its high-altitude terrain. Including the Metro Alpin, the world’s highest underground funicular, which provides fast access to the glacier slopes at 3,500+ metres. Thanks to continuous upgrades and well-managed capacity, queue times are generally short, even during peak season. The layout of the lift network helps distribute skiers evenly throughout the ski area, ensuring minimal congestion and a comfortable experience from the village base to the mountain’s highest viewpoints.

Special features

Saas-Fee stands out for its exceptional glacier terrain, which extends the ski season and even allows summer skiing. The resort is also home to one of Europe’s most renowned snow parks, attracting freestyle skiers and snowboarders with its jumps, rails, and professional training features. Off the slopes, the ice pavilion and panoramic viewpoints offer unique glacier experiences for non-skiers. Saas-Fee also prioritises accessibility: many lifts and facilities are wheelchair-friendly, and several local accommodations offer adapted rooms. Some ski schools provide specialised adaptive programs, ensuring that visitors with disabilities can enjoy the mountain safely and comfortably.

Saas-Fee - Off-Piste, Backcountry & Ski Touring

Freestyle enthusiasts can enjoy one of the Swiss Alps’ most famous snow parks, frequently used by professional teams for training. With its combination of perfectly groomed pistes, diverse gradients, and stunning glacial backdrops, Saas-Fee delivers a truly exceptional skiing experience both on piste and off piste. It attracts adventure skiers from all over the world to experience its diverse landscape.

Off-piste skiing

Saas-Fee is a fantastic location for off-piste skiing, no matter what level you are. Beginners can use a private guide who will provide safety equipment and lead you on some of the most beautiful off-piste trails through trees and in deep powder. But for those with more experience and advanced skiers, take yourself on an adventure, just make sure you have all the equipment you need to stay safe on the mountain.

Backcountry skiing

There are some beautiful backcountry routes in the Saas-Fee region, with a wide range of distances, making them suitable for all levels. If you are new to backcountry skiing, try a one-day trip around Allalinhorn to get in the flow. For a more adventurous route, try the Schönbiel Hut to Saas Almagell via the Strahlhorn, or Saas Almagell to Simplon Hospice. Always make sure to have the correct equipment with you and speak with the local ski schools and tourism office for more information on routes and weather updates.

Ski touring

As one of the best places for skiing in Switzerland, you are guaranteed to have a great experience with ski touring. Admire the beautiful valleys and snowcapped peaks as you cross glaciers and powdered summits. Most ski touring routes in Saas-Fee encounter glaciers, and these can only be crossed with a guide, so make sure to find a suitable tour to join.

Guided tours

Guided tours in Saas-Fee offer the opportunity to go beyond the piste for a truly unique experience while having the peace of mind of a guide leading the way. Take a guided hike across a glacier, or even try ice climbing in the high altitude peaks or enjoy one of the 15 winter hiking trails. Multiple companies offer guided tours led by highly trained guides, so make sure to research and find one that suits your needs.

Saas-Fee – Safety measures

Safety is a top priority in the Saas-Fee resort. From monitoring weather conditions to clearing pistes and closing them when it is unsafe to ski, the mountain patrol team does a great job of making sure everyone has fun while staying safe on the mountain. The resort itself is car-free, making it pedestrian-friendly, and all visitors are encouraged to take safety into mind when visiting. Precautions such as wearing protective equipment are encouraged, and rules are put in place to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.

Saas-Fee – Environmental measures

Saas-Fee is said to be the world's first carbon-neutral municipality, and environmental concerns are taken seriously in the Saas Valley. There are around 20 glaciers in Saas-Fee, and local authorities have seen them retreating, much like glaciers elsewhere, which has become a cause for concern and has spurred more sustainable development. Using hydroelectric power and creating car-free resorts have helped reduce reliance on fossil fuels and, in turn, lowered carbon emissions in the region. The resort continues to implement sustainability measures to protect wildlife, the local environment, and the people of Saas-Fee.

Saas-Fee - Family Skiing

Families will fit in well at the Saas-Fee resort as there is plenty to do both on and off the slopes. With the majority of pistes being intermediate, families can enjoy long runs together during the day and an evening of entertainment in the town. There are dedicated ski schools for younger children that offer group or private lessons to help your kids become confident on the slopes, and there are designated areas where children can play in the snow, such as Kian's Adventure Land. Many hotels offer daycare services and entertainment, such as kids' clubs, so that parents can take a break, too. There is suitable accommodation across the resort, and it is very welcoming to families of all sizes and ages.
