Flims Laax Falera - Overview

Located in the Southeast of the Swiss Alps is the little-known resort of Flims Laax Falera, which is leading the way toward a green future for skiing in Europe. With a large selection of slopes catering to a variety of levels, this is a fantastic place for eco-conscious skiers seeking adventure. Beyond the piste, visitors can enjoy many kilometres of fresh powder and endless stunning views, all while knowing they are skiing in one of the most sustainable resorts in the world.

From curling to ice skating, there is a wide variety of activities to keep everyone happy both on and off the slopes. Across these three villages, skiers can enjoy a variety of conditions and sample local cuisine in a low-carbon setting.

Flims Laax Falera - Ski Map & Pistes

With 216km of pisted runs, Flims Laax Falera offers a wide variety of runs to visitors for both families and adventurers. 70% of the resort is above 2,000 meters, meaning there are higher chances of consistent powder and a glacier, which helps keep temperatures cool and slopes smooth. The majority of pisted runs are best suited to beginners and intermediate skiers, but there are also some fantastic runs for advanced skiers and thrill seekers looking for an off-piste adventure.

Lifts and Queues

Flims Laax Falera has 30 lifts carrying visitors across the three ski areas. The efficient lift system is modern and runs entirely from renewable energy. There are two aerial tramways, 13 gondolas, 7 chair lifts and 8 t-bars, as well as 5 magic carpets for kids.

There are a few unique features of the lifts in Flims Laax Falera that set it apart from other resorts in Switzerland. To help visitors get around easily and at their convenience, the resort has opened FlemXpress, the world's first ‘on demand’ cable car. It only runs when it is needed, almost like a taxi service.

The Porsche-designed chair lift from Scansinas to Mutta Rotunda has heated seats and swivels 45 degrees, giving riders a fantastic view of the mountains. These advancements in lift development not only benefit the environment but also provide visitors with a better experience.

Special Features

Flims Laax Falera has many features that attract skiers and snowboarders from around the world. It is home to Europe's biggest halfpipe, located in Laax, as well as 5 snow parks where visitors can enjoy a variety of kickers, pipes and more. It is a paradise for skiers and boarders who like freestyle and want to practise their skills.

Flims Laax Falera is a good resort for disabled visitors as it is modern and facilities are designed with every visitor in mind. Discounted lift passes are available at resort ticket offices, and Laax offers assisted mountain activities, making everyone feel welcome.

Flims Laax Falera - Off-Piste, Backcountry & Ski Touring

As the resort areas span across three villages, there is a great selection of off-piste activities that provide powder and epic adventure for all. There are many guided tours, trails and routes that provide additional adventures for visitors to Flims Laax Falera. The area provides the perfect setting for venturing between the three hubs, making ski touring and backcountry skiing great activities.

Off-piste skiing

Going off piste is a great way to explore beyond the slopes and experience adrenaline at its finest. It is always best to get a guide if you are new to off-piste or are not familiar with the area. If you are confident and experienced, you still need to check weather conditions in case of avalanche risk or adverse weather systems, so always make sure to speak with a member of the mountain team before setting off.

Backcountry skiing

Backcountry skiing is a great way to explore a region, and it allows you to get deeper into nature; however, with this comes added danger. So always make sure to check the avalanche warning and weather before you set out if you are not taking a guide. Guided routes are a good option for those who want to be able to enjoy the thrill of an adventure through powder without having to worry about navigating. Taking routes through unmarked landscapes can be incredibly rewarding, but if you are seeking a slightly easier path, then also consider cross-country skiing.

Ski touring

There are many options for ski touring in Flims Laax Falera, with a selection of shorter routes for beginners, such as the Flida route, which is just over 4km and longer routes for experts. One of the most rewarding ski touring routes is Segneshütte - Trinserhorn, a 16 km route to the Trinserhorn through the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tectonic Arena Sardona.

Guided tours

There are many guided tour options in Flims Laax Falera, and this is a good option for anyone visiting the resort. Taking a guide adds an element of safety and allows you to enjoy the surroundings and endless mountain views. From off-piste lessons to guided ski touring, there are many options available in Flims Laax Falera to cater to your needs.

Flims Laax Falera – Safety Measures

There are many safety measures in place to ensure visitors have fun on the slopes without injury. There is a fantastic mountain team that offers rescue services and maintains the slopes. If there are weather issues or the mountain becomes unsafe, the mountain staff will close slopes as appropriate and ensure everyone gets off the mountain safely.

Flims Laax Falera – Environmental Measures

As possibly the greenest resort in Switzerland, it features many environmental measures to make it a sustainable travel haven. From plant-based menus to ski-repair services that encourage reusing gear rather than replacing it, this resort was designed with the environment in mind. Restaurants use locally sourced, seasonal ingredients to make sure local producers see the reward of their work.

Buildings are equipped with solar panels and are well insulated so they can be as efficient as possible, whilst the lifts run entirely from renewable energy. The resort uses e-vehicles and promotes using public transport and reducing car use. Introducing their gondola, an on-demand service, has helped reduce emissions because it is only used when needed.

There are many elements that have been considered in Flims Laax Falera that benefit the local people, environment and flora and fauna.

Flims Laax Falera - Family Skiing

Flims Laax Falera - Restaurants, Bars & The Town

Restaurants

  • Tegia Miez
  • Restaurant Ustria La Cauma
  • Atelier Spalegna

Flims Laax Falera - Accommodation Options

Across the three ski towns, there are plenty of accommodation options from luxury hotels with wellness facilities to self-catering holiday homes for families. As one of the best ski areas in Switzerland, there are many hotels designed to cater for different needs. Some have a wellness focus, others offer daycare services and kids' clubs for families. There are also options such as guest houses and B&Bs, as well as holiday homes and Airbnb.

Choosing your accommodation will impact your experience as there are many factors that change with where you stay, such as transport, the ability to eat in and having access to amenities.

If you want to experience a more traditional way of life in the Swiss Alps, then Falera is a good option, whereas Laax provides more action and could be a good option for families looking for lots to do or adventurers who want direct access to some of the most epic runs.

Staying in one of the towns means you will have direct access to slopes and amenities on foot, making your stay accessible and simple. However, being located in the heart of the action sometimes means you may experience a less tranquil stay. Staying a little bit away from the action can provide a more tranquil experience, but it may require taking transport to the slopes.

Other Activities

Aside from being a ski resort, there are many other activities to enjoy that don't involve skis. Why not enjoy a toboggan ride or ice skating at Falera or Lake Laax when it freezes over? There is also the chance to try curling at the Flims curling club or learn how to play Ice Stock Sport. Other activities to keep the kids entertained are bowling and climbing, which are great indoor options if the weather isn't on your side. There are also museums and libraries that offer another indoor option, and the indoor freestyle academy, where anyone can learn tricks and have fun.

Unwind from the slopes in one of the many wellness areas or spas, or simply enjoy a yoga class to stretch your muscles after an active holiday.
